Father, Son, & A Special Kind Of Blindness
The father loved his son so much.
So incredibly much.
Most people know, or know of, this deep feeling of love, where you’d do anything, give anything, sacrifice anything to help another.
It’s a powerful kind of love.
And the father knew he had a powerful gift — the ability to create powerful brands, online presences, and websites from scratch, almost with a flick of the wrist. He’d developed it over years and years and years of mastery, helping client after client.
His creations were moving, and a joy to interact with.
So when the son said, “I have a dream of being a great magician, it’s so much fun for me.” the father jumped into gear, knowing his son’s magic made people happy, and using his expertise, created MagicMovesYou.com, which he gave to his son.
The son smiled & clapped, played with it for a month, and then forgot about it in a life of girls and partying.
A few years later, when the son arrived home after hanging out with a rich lawyer friend, and said “Dad, dad! I have a great opportunity to be a lawyer and help people out of tricky situations!” – So the father dug deep into his soul for a way to make lawyering creative, impactful and fun, just like his child – and he came up with BarristersCanBeFun.com.
The son smiled & clapped, wrote a couple articles for it, and then let it sit as he gave in to the pressures of 9-5 cubicle life, and money-crunches. He had no time for lawyering adventures now.
Even more years later, the son had matured and had put quite a bit of time into inventing a new Portapotty system for concerts and outdoor events. “Dad. I’m ready to release my new system to the public!” and the father, wanting to use his gift wherever he could, and especially for his son, launched WinWinWasteDesigns.com
By now, you probably figured what happened –
The son smiled & clapped, and nothing much came of it, but the Dad knew he’d given his best, shone his gift into the world, for clients, and for his son.
Fast-forward a few more years.
The Dad is dying now, and he and the son had drifted. The son is focused on his new family, and had to get two jobs to support them all, and he’d moved far away. In fact, right now, he’s actually in a board meeting at his job, listening to a round circle of different consultants put in bids for his company’s corporate re-brand.
As he listened to the project outlines and the fees required… his jaw started to drop.
Because out of the 5 branding experts there, the lowest price anyone could do the re-brand for, was 6 figures.
His mind started whirling.
Every time his Dad had created a brand for him, made to reflect the real him, he was offering him a tremendous value. And every time he’d ignored it, or took it for granted, he was blind to tremendous value.
He excused himself from the meeting, booked a flight to his Dad’s home in Portland, and called his father.
“I’m so sorry, Dad. I love you.”
“I love you too, son.”
Now, let me be clear, I can help you very well with your brand and online presence, but my real gift, is my wisdom. My conversation. My way with words. My explanations, insight, and understandings of everything under the sun. It’s my fresh views on taboos, and my ability to give you ‘real talk’ on what’s important.
I’ve lived tons of chaotic life, many trials by fire, to refine and develop myself, and I’m fucking amazing at what I do.
You get to choose if you’re the immature version of the son who’s blind to value right under their nose, just because it’s easily acquired and freely given with love, or if you’re the mature version, who deeply appreciates the gift in front of him, and goes the extra mile to bring it into his life.
